Packaging expert adds new expertise to esteemed group

ALEXANDRIA, VA, July 6, 2011 – Product packaging is critical to the success of the temperature-controlled supply chain. In the cold chain industry, packaging helps to ensure product integrity, but also has the potential to improve efficiencies in the cold chain through better design.

To assist its members in understanding and maximizing packaging, the World Food Logistics Organization (WFLO) appointed package labeling expert Dr. S. Paul Singh to the WFLO Scientific Advisory Council.

Dr. Singh has extensive experience in packaging line systems, package design for product protection, evaluating package specifications, automation for packaging, and packaging forensics.

Dr. Singh is a professor at Michigan State University’s School of Packaging in East Lansing, Michigan, USA. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Packaging Research Institutes and the ISTA Global Board for the International Safe Transit Association. Dr. Singh is a Past Chair of ASTM D10-Packaging, Division 1, American Society of Testing and Materials International and a 2010 inductee of the Military Packaging Hall of Fame. He is also the President of Packaging Forensic Analysis, Inc.

In addition to authoring over 100 research papers published in peer-reviewed technical journals, Dr. Singh has written over 100 reports on various studies done to test and evaluate packaging systems for various companies. He has also served as a consultant to over 1,000 domestic and international companies, such
as Chiquita, ConAgra Foods, and Kraft, Inc.

“Packaging is a complicated and critical component of logistics,” said GCCA President and CEO Bill Hudson. “Dr. Singh’s appointment will help our members and our association address and understand this important issue.”

The WFLO Scientific Advisory Council is a select body of eminent scientists, each a leader in a specific area of food technology, food science, food economics, or logistics. Council members help members of WFLO and other Core Partners of the Global Cold Chain Alliance year-round through research projects, technical manuals, and a member inquiry service.
