Twenty-seven people attended a Cold Chain Connection on December 7, 2018 in Toronto, which featured a roundtable discussion on the burdens of the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) operating engineer requirement. GCCA has been working alongside members in the region including Eben James, President & CEO of Trenton Cold Storage, for the last two and a half years to create a new pathway of how to meet requirements of TSSA, with a goal of reducing the financial burden and requirements around operating engineers in warehouse facilities. GCCA has succeeded in helping to gain prioritization for the engineer’s rule, as on December 6, Todd Smith, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, announced over 30 actions to make it easier for businesses to create jobs. If passed, the “Restoring Ontario’s Competitiveness Act, 2018” will amend and simplify the TSSA rule on engineers, effectively saving members operating in Ontario hefty financial costs associated with staffing engineers. This will be part of a legislative package entitled the “Ontario Open for Business Action Plan” that will be before the parliament in Ontario in 2019.
