IACSC and IARW Publish White Papers on Critical Issues in Cold Storage Construction

July 15, 2013

Critical issues in cold storage construction and operations are addressed in two white papers published recently by the International Association for Cold Storage Construction (IACSC) and the International Association of Refrigerated Warehouses (IARW).

Members of the IACSC-IARW Construction/Codes Committee spearheaded development of the white papers, which include:

“Application of Automation within a Public Refrigerated Warehouse,” which assesses the application of automated storage and retrieval systems in public refrigerated warehouses.

“Solar Photovoltaic System Guidelines,” which discusses the pros and cons of solar systems, different types of solar technologies, and mounting systems. It helps identify the optimal solar system for public refrigerated warehouses based on their specific requirements as well as potential challenges before installation.

The following IACSC and IARW members contributed to the automation white paper:

  • Michael Lynch, United States Cold Storage, Inc.
  • Jake Stefan, LEED AP BD&C, ARCO Design/Build, Inc.
  • Scott Griffin, Griffco Design/Build, Inc.
  • T. H (Ted) Elicker, PE
  • Sean O’Farrell, Dematic Corporation

The following IACSC and IARW members contributed to the solar photovoltaic systems guidelines white paper (H.D. Boesch was the primary author):

  • HD Boesch, Mangan Renewables
  • Curt Edmisten, MTC Logistics
  • Michael Lynch, United States Cold Storage, Inc.
  • Thomas McClellan, Cool Lumens, Inc.
  • Jerry von Dohlen, Port Newark Refrigerated Warehouse
  • Mike Walters, HelioSage, LLC

The white papers were developed by subcommittees of the IACSC-IARW Construction/Codes Committee, which drafts and reviews technical publications and addresses technical questions submitted by industry members. The committee covers all aspects of warehouse construction, including design, cost, materials, and codes. Resource guests include codes officials and associate members in construction.

The white papers went through an extensive peer review process to ensure accuracy and quality, but are not intended to be the “final word” on their subjects. As processes and technologies change, IACSC and IARW intend to revise the white papers as the industry changes. Members are encouraged to submit comments for consideration on the white paper at any point. Comments may be sent email@iacsc.org.

The white papers are available electronically via the GCCA website, free of charge to members of IACSC or IARW. The papers are also available for sale to nonmembers.

IARW and IACSC are core partners of the Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA), which represents all major industries engaged in temperature-controlled logistics. For more information, visit www.gcca.org.
