IACSC and IARW Publish White Paper on Controlled Environment Fire Prevention

January 15, 2014

The critical concept of using oxygen reduction technology for fire prevention is addressed in a white paper recently published by the the International Association for Cold Storage Construction (IACSC) and the International Association of Refrigerated Warehouses (IARW).

Oxygen reduction technology for fire prevention has already been adopted by European users and public safety officials for a number of years. Its premise is the concept of reducing the concentration of oxygen within a controlled environment to a degree that prevents fire from starting or spreading but continues to support human life.

After careful examination of its viability and associated costs, this “Controlled Environment Fire Prevention” white paper suggests it might be adopted in the United States, only if additional research confirms that it does not cause serious occupational hazards.

The paper was authored by Donald Wiginton, CEO of Wiginton Fire Systems and IACSC-IARW Construction/Codes Committee member and Peter Clauss, Marketing Director of the Wagner Group. The following IACSC-IARW Construction/Codes Committee members also developed and contributed to the paper:

  • Scott Griffin, President, Griffco Designs Build, Inc.
  • Jim Romine, Senior Director, Engineering, Lineage Logistics
  • Darrin Sealover, Vice President of Graycor Construction
  • Fred Walker, Senior Vice President of Engineering, Americold Logistics

The white paper went through an extensive peer review process to ensure accuracy and quality, but is not intended to be the “final word” on the subject. As processes and technologies change, IACSC and IARW intend to revise the white paper. Interested parties are encouraged to submit comments for consideration to email@iacsc.org.

The white paper is available for download here, free of charge to members of IACSC or IARW. It is also available for sale to nonmembers.
